Identification numbers

Structure of VIN

Improvement of products is continuous process of any line production. At the same time, except for cases of large changes of a design of the models descending from the conveyor, results of process of modification are not covered in the operation manual on the car. However, the manufacturer makes out number lists of the released spare parts in view of what upon purchase of the last information coded in identification numbers of the car is of particular importance. Doing the order for a necessary spare detail, try to provide to the seller fuller information on the car. Surely report the name of model, year of release, and also number of a body and the power unit.

    Number of the chassis is beaten out on the forward panel of a body of the car. Number of the engine is beaten out on the block of cylinders. The plate with number of transmission is fixed from above a transmission case.
Do not confuse number of transmission to number of the engine.


Number of the chassis on a forward cross beam of a body (over a radiator) is absent.

On some modifications of the car of number of the chassis and engine are duplicated on the plate which is attached to a forward board of a body.

On other modifications of the car the plate with number of the chassis is on a forward cross-piece of a body (over a radiator).

Some options of execution of the car provide an arrangement of the certified plate at a back end face of a driver's door.


The certified plate at an end face of a driver's door is absent.

Identification number of the car (VIN)

This extremely important number is beaten out on a back partition of a motive compartment, and also on Schild, fixed on the dashboard under a windshield from the driver's party of the car. VIN is also brought in PTS and the registration certificate. In number information on the date/place of release and type of a body of the car is ciphered (see an accompanying illustration).

Code of the engine and year of release of model

Two main components of VIN are the code of year of release of model and a code of the line of the assembly/body/engine.

Considering from left to right, the 4th, 5th and 6th positions of number belong to a code of the line of the assembly/body/engine. So, the Civic models are defined by the following combinations:

   EJ6 = 3-dverny/D16Y7
   EJ7 = 2-dverny/D16Y5
   EJ8 = 4-dverny/D16Y8

Combinations are characteristic of the Integra models:

   DB7 = 4-dverny/B18B1
   DB8 = 4-dverny/B18C1
   DC2 = 3-dverny/B18C1, B18C5
   DC4 = 3-dverny/B18B1

The tenth position of VIN defines year of release of model:

   R = 1994
   S = 1995
   T = 1996
   V = 1997
   W = 1998

Number of the engine

Number of the engine without which it is impossible to do at the order of spare parts for the power unit is located on the right (from the passenger party of the car) on the block, near a final collector. The first five positions of number define an engine code. In the present manual the models equipped with engines of the following four types are considered:


   D16Y5 = 1.6 l, SOHC, 16-valvate, VTEC-E
   D16Y7 = 1.6 l, SOHC, 16-valvate
   D16Y7 = 1.6 l, SOHC, 16-valvate, VTEC


   B18B1 = 1.8 l, DOHC, 16-valvate
   B18C1 = 1.8 l, SOHC, 16-valvate, VTEC
   B18C5 = 1.8 l, DOHC, 16-valvate, VTEC

Number of transmission

This number is required at the order of spare parts for repair of the transmission line. On the models equipped with RKPP number of transmission is beaten out on a coupling dome, near a starter. On models with AT number is located on the right in a forward part of a case of transmission, near the measuring probe. On the models equipped with CVT, number is on the vertical platform, also near the measuring probe.
