Check of serviceability of a state and replacement of the sensor of a detonation

Before starting removal of the oxygen sensor, wait for full cooling of the engine.

The sensor of a detonation reacts to increase in intensity of vibrations of the engine, usually caused by a detonation of air-fuel mix. On the basis of information obtained from the sensor system we correct the ignition advancing moment, trying to support him at the greatest possible level guaranteeing sufficient efficiency of return of the engine. The sensor develops a signal of alternating current which amplitude increases in proportion to the level of vibrations. For compensation of detonations of ECM/PCM if necessary issues the command for moving of the moment of ignition towards delay.

Sensors of a detonation are used not on all models, and only on the following:

   a) Civic with the D16Y5 and CVT engine;
   b) Civic with the D16Y8 engine;
   c) Integra with B18C1 and B18C5 engines.

Check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Disunite its electric socket of the sensor of a detonation and turn out the last from the engine (see an accompanying illustration). Again connect the socket to the sensor. Check of sensors of this type is made by registration of fluctuations of tension on the voltmeter. Switch the device to a scale of low voltage of alternating current. Connect the negative probe of the measuring instrument to the sensor case, positive – to the contact plug. Slightly knock on the lower part of the sensor with the hammer, feigning vibration. If the voltmeter does not register fluctuations of tension, the sensor should be replaced.

In principle this check can be made also without removal of the sensor from the engine.

Replacement

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. The sensor of a detonation is screwed in the canal of a cooling path of the block of the engine (see an illustration above) and its reversing is connected with certain losses of cooling liquid which can be avoided beforehand having emptied the block (see the Head Routine maintenance). Disunite the electric socket and turn out the sensor from the engine.
2. New sensors are usually delivered with the carving part covered with the anti-taking sealant. Screw the replaceable sensor on the regular place and tighten it with the required effort. Connect an electrical wiring to the sensor and fill the cooling system (see the Head Routine maintenance). Check the engine for existence of signs of leak of cooling liquid.

Tightening of the sensor of a detonation with excessive effort can lead to an irreversible exit it out of operation.
